A minimum of thirteen passengers lose their lives and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.
A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.
The president announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its role in public works. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
