Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“That was regrettable. It was essentially an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the signal was completely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the wrong digit,” he remarked. “It was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
- Former Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, possesses an estimated net worth of around $16bn, so the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.
