Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using these treatments must be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
